Get ready to dive in, because two of Canada’s largest outdoor swimming pools are now open for the season. Operated by the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA), these popular pools are located within scenic conservation areas at Brant Conservation Area in Brantford and Byng Island Conservation Area near Dunnville.
These impressive pools provide a refreshing escape for families and outdoor lovers across southern Ontario. Pam Walther-Mabee, Director of Conservation Area Operations for the GRCA, is proud of the pools’ family-friendly design. “A low slope entry all the way around the pool means that there is plenty of water frontage for people of all ages to enjoy,” she says. “The large pools and expansive Byng Island and Brant Conservation Areas allow us to accommodate many guests comfortably.”
At Byng Island, the pool spans two acres and features a deeper zone complete with a diving board, accommodating up to 1,000 swimmers. The Brant Conservation Area pool is slightly smaller at 1.25 acres and offers plenty of room to splash around. Both pools also include splashpads designed especially for younger children to enjoy safely.
Admission is $2.75 per person for those aged four and older. Visitors over three years old will also need to pay a day-use fee to enter the conservation areas. Brant Conservation Area’s pool is open daily from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m, while the Byng Island pool hours are 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., open seven days a week starting June 26.
Beyond swimming, both conservation areas offer a wide range of outdoor activities. From hiking and cycling to camping and wildlife viewing, there’s something for everyone. Byng Island also provides kayak, canoe, and paddle boat rentals, along with access for sailboats and power boats. Meanwhile, Brant Conservation Area features several Grand River access points that are perfect for paddlers bringing their own watercraft.
