Travel provides opportunity to shop for unique items

This week Lorraine discusses the 'thrill of the hunt' when shopping on vacation

Greetings, fellow travellers and shopaholics! If you’re anything like me, a trip isn’t just about capturing photos of iconic landmarks or sampling the local cuisine. It’s also about the thrill of the hunt - diving into the bustling markets, quaint boutiques, and buzzing outlet malls of the world to unearth clothing and accessories that scream one thing: unique.

Let's talk about the irresistible allure of a good bargain. There's something incredibly satisfying about coming across a fantastic deal, especially when it's in a charming little discount store halfway across the globe and something you won’t see back home. These hidden gems often stock the kind of exclusive items that have a totally different vibe to what you'd find back home, and at prices that can make even the most seasoned shoppers' hearts skip a beat.

Outlet Malls: The Thrill of the Hunt

When time allows during my travels, I make it a point to seek out an outlet mall, particularly those with stores I’ve never heard of before. These sprawling shopping heavens aren't just places to stretch your legs after long hours of travel; they're treasure troves of last season’s designer labels at a fraction of the price. Whether it’s a chic leather bag from an Italian luxury brand or a quirky pair of shoes from a renowned Parisian designer, outlet malls often offer that perfect piece to make your wardrobe stand out—all without breaking the bank. I love a TK Maxx (Winners/Marshals in other countries as they are different. The best bargains I ever found in one place was in Amsterdam. It was fabulous!

Thrift Stores: The Joy of Unique Finds

But let’s not overlook the humble thrift store—a mecca for the fashion-forward traveler. Shopping in thrift stores in different countries is like going on a treasure hunt, where the X marks a vintage Versace dress or a retro Adidas jacket. Each piece tells a story, a snippet of the cultural and fashion history of its place. And the best part? You acquire standout pieces that not only enhance your style but also carry tales from lands afar. Recently in Antwerp, I found a British designer dress - Betty Barclay for just 16 euros. That’s a steal. Feel free to stand in the store and google the labels, they are mostly run by charities who are happy to have you there so google away and bag that bargain! You may be able to sell it back home too if you change your mind later.

Designer Footwear at Factory Prices - Oh, Don't Get Me Started!

The Riviera Del Brenta is the manufacturing ground for designers like Jimmy Choo, Armani, and Sergio Rossi. The outlets, such as Ballin and Voltan, offer a wide range of shoes from high heels to elegant boots at a fraction of the retail price. Ballin's outlet, for instance, presented an array from €99 to €300, including a special section for samples. Meanwhile, Voltan's three-story villa-like outlet provided a classy selection starting at around €90. Every time I bring a group to Italy we go here. I have bought unique leather sneakers that are soft as silk and fancy party shoes with matching purses. It is worth it I promise you! Trip planned for November. Info coming soon.

Seeking French Pieces for Your Home

In France, brocantes and flea markets are more than just markets; they're a cultural experience, rich in history and treasures. Notable among them is the Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen in Paris, one of the world's largest antique markets while the Isle-sur-la-Sorgue market in Provence is famed for its antique furniture and decorative arts. Each market provides a unique glimpse into French culture and is a paradise for collectors and casual shoppers alike. Bargaining is part of the experience, and for international shoppers, many vendors and some larger markets offer services to ship your treasures back home, making it easier to bring a piece (or few) of French history into your living space. Whether you're a seasoned collector or simply looking for a unique souvenir, these markets are an essential stop on any shopping itinerary in France. Perhaps you can join me and Shai DeLuca on a future France shopping trip for your home and we can help you ship too.

Treasures in Hoi An, Vietnam

Wrapping up with a recent personal highlight, let’s talk about my unforgettable visit to Hoi An, Vietnam - a haven for custom shopping aficionados. I was particularly excited about the local tailor shops, where the options to personalize are endless. Imagine selecting from a rainbow of fabrics and collaborating with skilled tailors to bring your vision to life. During my visit, I designed a unique orange coat with a custom design and pure silk lining, complemented by a matching shirt - each piece tailor-made to fit perfectly and reflect my style. And don't forget the glasses! In Hoi An, I picked up some prescription glasses, fully equipped with anti-glare and variable lenses, for just $168 USD, a fraction of what you might pay elsewhere. Whether it’s revamping your wardrobe or updating your glasses, Hoi An offers exceptional quality, style, and value. It’s not just shopping; it’s a fun, personal adventure in style.

If all this sounds like way too much effort to plan, fear not my friends as I am going on an Asia tour in December where you can come shopping with me.
