As the busy summer travel season approaches, Canadian travellers planning to visit some of Europe's most popular destinations should be aware of new travel warnings issued by the Government of Canada.

On June 4, 2024, the federal government updated its travel advisory, urging residents to exercise a high degree of caution when travelling to Italy due to heightened terrorism threats.

France, Germany and Spain are also under the same risk level as Italy.

The updated advisory specifically mentioning Italy, where the risk level was increased from "take normal security precautions" to "exercise a high degree of caution." The advisory underscores the current "threat of terrorism in Europe," with terrorists having carried out attacks in several cities across the continent and the likelihood of further attacks elsewhere in Europe.

"Attacks in Italy cannot be ruled out," the advisory warns, signalling a significant concern for the safety of Canadian travellers. This heightened risk level indicates that there are notable safety and security concerns, and the situation could change rapidly. Travellers are advised to remain vigilant at all times, monitor local media, and follow the instructions of local authorities.

The advisory notes that public areas such as government buildings, schools, places of worship, airports, and other transportation hubs, as well as tourist attractions, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping centres, markets, hotels, and other sites frequented by foreigners, could be potential targets.

"Always be aware of your surroundings when in public places," the Canadian government advises. "Be particularly vigilant if attending sporting events and during religious holidays and other public celebrations, as terrorists have used such occasions to mount attacks."

As Canadian travellers prepare for their summer adventures, it is crucial to stay informed and exercise heightened caution to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip. For the latest updates and detailed travel advisories, visit the Government of Canada's official travel website.
