The Ontario government has revealed plans for the creation of its first all-season, full-service provincial park in over 40 years.

Located near Bracebridge, Bigwind Lake Provincial Park will soon offer a wide range of recreational activities, overnight and electrified campgrounds, backcountry camping, and more, ensuring an exceptional visitor experience throughout the year.

Covering nearly 5,000 acres (1,967 hectares), Bigwind Lake Provincial Park surpasses the size of neighbouring Arrowhead Provincial Park by one and a half times. Its remarkable ecological diversity showcases five named lakes, extensive upland forests, and enchanting marshes and meadows, providing a picturesque backdrop for outdoor enthusiasts.

Currently classified as a non-operating provincial park, Bigwind Lake offers low-intensity, self-guided recreational opportunities, such as hiking and nature appreciation. However, the planned transformation into a fully operating provincial park will bring a host of exciting developments. The park will feature modern buildings and amenities, including a visitor centre, electric vehicle charging stations, and electrified campsites, meeting the expectations of today's campers and park visitors.

To ensure a collaborative approach, the government plans to engage Indigenous communities, local municipalities, stakeholders, and the public in discussions regarding the proposed new operating park. Individuals are encouraged to provide their input on the park's design features until August 6. Construction is expected to commence in the fall of 2024.
