Travelling economy on a long-haul flight can be a much more pleasant experience with the right preparation. Let's dive into how you can elevate your in-flight comfort, making the journey as delightful as the destination.
Essentials for comfort and convenience
Choose your seat wisely
The importance of selecting a good seat cannot be overstated. I recommend checking in as early as possible - usually 24 hours before your flight - to secure the best available seat. If you’re prone to feeling cramped on long flights, consider paying a little extra for a window or aisle seat. The freedom to lean against the wall or stretch your legs occasionally without disturbing your neighbour can make a substantial difference.
Consider buying or bidding for an upgrade
If you’re up for it, many airlines offer the option to bid for an upgrade as long as you don’t book basic economy. . Don't shy away from this opportunity, but remember, don’t bid too low. Make a realistic offer based on the flight's occupancy and the value of the upgrade. Call the airline and check the flight capacity in all classes so you can gauge where to bid. Sometimes, investing a bit more for extra comfort is well worth it, especially on flights lasting over ten hours. I save my loyalty points, buy a premium economy ticket so I have the highest chance of an upgrade.
Gear up with essential gadgets
Leg sling
Imagine a hammock for your legs. A leg sling that attaches to your tray table can elevate your legs slightly, improving circulation and reducing the discomfort from sitting in one position too long. This simple gadget can be a game-changer for enhancing your in-flight comfort.
Wrap-around neck pillow
Upgrade from the traditional U-shaped pillow to a wrap-around neck pillow for 360-degree support. This will help you avoid the awkward head droop and ensure you can get some restful sleep, even in the cramped quarters of economy class.
Multi-purpose large scarf
Never underestimate the versatility of a large, soft scarf. It's perfect for extra warmth when the cabin temperature drops, can be rolled up as a makeshift pillow, or used as a cozy wrap. Opt for a scarf made from breathable fabric like cotton or bamboo fibre for ultimate comfort.
Smart snacking and entertainment
Snack smart
On my flights, I always bring snacks that are easy on the stomach, such as rice cakes or banana chips. Nutritious snack bars are also a great choice. These snacks won't just fend off hunger - they'll keep you feeling light and energetic upon arrival.
Entertainment essentials
Don’t rely solely on the airline's entertainment options. Preload your devices with your favourite shows, movies, or books. Make sure your electronic devices are fully charged, and pack a portable battery pack as a backup.
Noise-cancelling headphones
A reliable pair of noise-cancelling headphones is crucial for creating a personal quiet space. They help you tune out the cabin noise and can significantly improve your ability to relax or sleep during the flight.
Optimizing in-flight wellness
Dress comfortably
Always choose layers made from stretchy, breathable materials. I opt for loose trousers or leggings combined with a T-shirt and a light sweater or cardigan, which allows for easy adjustment to cabin temperature changes. Comfortable, flat shoes are essential as they accommodate swollen feet and make it easier to navigate through airports. I bring a wrap which will double as a beach wrap later and another extra scarf to put over my head if lights are high or I just need some privacy to sleep.
Skin care on the go
Airplane cabins are extremely dry, so I skip the makeup on flight days and opt for a heavy night moisturizer instead. I apply a liberal amount of a rich night cream as soon as I settle into my seat, and before landing, I like to use hydrating eye masks to prevent puffy eyes. This regimen keeps my skin hydrated and fresh throughout the flight.
Stay hydrated
Avoid alcohol and caffeine, as they can disrupt your sleep and lead to dehydration. Drinking plenty of water throughout the flight is key to feeling fresh upon arrival.
Strategies for Sleeping Soundly
Eye mask and earplugs
Don't forget to pack an eye mask and a pair of earplugs. These are essential for creating a conducive sleep environment by blocking out light and reducing noise. They transform your seat into a peaceful sleep sanctuary, making it easier to get some rest.
Consider natural sleep aids
If sleep eludes you on flights, consider natural aids like melatonin or herbal teas such as chamomile or valerian root. Always consult with a healthcare professional before trying new supplements, particularly when combining them with travel.
Adjust your body clock
Begin adjusting your sleep schedule a few days before your trip. Slowly shift your bedtime to match the time zone of your destination. I recommend setting your watch to your destination's local time as soon as you board the plane, which can help mentally prepare you for the change.
Personally, I make it a point to try and sleep on the plane regardless of the time because typically, you'll feel tired after travelling. If you land at night, you'll likely still manage to get some rest afterward; if you arrive during the day, do your best to stay awake until the evening. This approach can significantly help mitigate jet lag on your first day. It may be tough, but staying awake is often the key to adjusting swiftly and effectively!
