Filling your heart with Ireland

This week Lorraine extends an invitation to experience the storytelling magic of this enchanting isle

They say that travel turns everyone into a storyteller. So, imagine you're already a storyteller and you visit a magical isle where storytellers are in abundance, drawing you into their world, luring you, and inviting you to become more than friends. In 2021, Tourism Ireland unveiled a campaign called "Fill Your Heart with Ireland." I was invited to visit and, given it was still the pandemic, it was a self-guided driving trip. Yes, the wrong side of the road for me, single tracks with sheep as traffic jams, and fields so green they looked lifted from a storybook. Fill our hearts? Absolutely, and we never looked back.

Ireland, with its rolling green hills, ancient castles, and rugged coastlines, captivates the heart of every visitor. Stepping into this land feels like entering a fairy tale, where every turn in the road unveils a new story. The locals treat you not as a tourist, but as a long-lost friend. Asking for directions might earn you an invitation for tea, and before you know it, you're by the fireplace, exchanging stories as if you were family. This genuine hospitality transforms a simple trip into a heartfelt journey.

My CRAZY Story

For two weeks, we explored every corner and traversed every side road, taking Route D and embracing the joy of the unknown. The locals we met, the absolutely amazing food, seafood fresh from the ocean, bread so delectable I wished to bathe in its butter, and the discovery of small artisan producers at farmers' markets and food festivals across the country enriched our experience. After this initial exploration, I felt a deep connection to Ireland, a sense that I was meant to live here one day. The magic of Ireland filled my heart, a sentiment difficult to encapsulate in words.

On a whim, we found a smallholding with five little cottages on two acres of land up for auction that very day. In a moment of sheer madness, driven by an undeniable gut feeling, I placed a £5,000 deposit to bid on this nearly derelict property. Just like that, an hour later and £20,000 under budget, it became ours, sight unseen except for a realtor's video. Crazy, right? My partner, Keith, a builder with 35 years of experience, supported this spontaneous decision. We fell in love with the place, as much as with each other—okay, don't cringe! Watch the video here.

Fast forward two years, and our happiness knows no bounds. True, the journey required significant work and investment, but we were ready for it. Initially, the cottages were so overgrown we had to literally dig them out. Now, much of our time is spent in Ireland, with my work being conducted remotely. We still host groups, flying out from Dublin or Shannon when needed. Our aim is to assist others in purchasing property in Ireland, so if you're harbouring any 'crazy' ideas, I've got you covered.

You can follow our renovation adventure on our Instagram page and through shared videos. We named our haven Lemonade Cottages, inspired by the pandemic's lesson of making the best out of life's lemons. Almost four cottages are now ready, each renovated with immense love, care, and a sprinkle of whimsy. My background in travel and hospitality prompted me to focus on the little things that make a big difference—comfortable mattresses, bedding, USB ports, touch on-and-off lights, handy gadgets, and coffee makers. These details, while seemingly small, set us apart in the countryside.

Lemonade Cottages has transformed into a cosy country retreat, complete with a wood-fired hot tub and an original, traditional Romani Gypsy Caravan we're renovating for use as a unique guest space. Situated just 20 minutes from stunning beaches and the dramatic cliffs of Kilkee, Lemonade Cottages serves as an ideal base for exploring the natural beauty and local culture of the area. The proximity to charming towns and villages enhances the experience, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the local lifestyle, cuisine, and history.

Through sharing this story, I hope to convey the warmth and love we've poured into making these cottages a special place. It's like sharing a part of my dream come true with a friend. Lemonade Cottages isn't just a place to stay; it's a piece of my heart, inviting you into the magical embrace of Ireland.

Discover Ireland: My Favourite Places

No single trip can capture the full essence of Ireland's landscapes, stories, and people, but a well-planned route can offer a glimpse into its vast cultural and breathtaking beauty.

Dublin: The Vibrant Capital Begin with two nights in Dublin, immersing yourself in Irish culture at literary haunts, Temple Bar's pubs, Trinity College, and the Book of Kells. Don't miss the Guinness Storehouse and the EPIC Museum. I like the Aloft Hotel by Marriott. Comfortable rooms and great location.

Cashel: Historical Elegance Stay at Cashel Palace Hotel, with the historic Rock of Cashel as a breathtaking backdrop, blending comfort with history.

Cork and Kinsale: Culinary and Artistic Haven Head south to Cork and the vibrant town of Kinsale, take a fabulous food or a hilarious ghost walk there, a paradise for foodies and art lovers. A visit to Blarney Castle to kiss the Blarney Stone is essential. Explore Cobh and its fascinating Titanic Museum, and snap a photo of the iconic colourful houses. Hayfield Manor is my favourite in Cork , and one of my top five in the world actually.

Bantry: Coastal Charm Visit the coastal town of Bantry, famous for its street market and ferries to nearby islands, offering a blend of local culture and natural beauty.Liss Ard Estate is great here.

Killarney and the Ring of Kerry: Scenic Exploration Journey west to Killarney, the gateway to the Ring of Kerry, with its stunning mountain, lake, and Atlantic views, alongside picturesque villages and historical sites. I love the The Great Southern Hotel where the old railway was. Fabulous hotel in the best location. Don’t miss Murphy ice cream.

For those with more time, consider adding Donegal in the North, Waterford, and Wexford in the South East. The weather may be unpredictable, but packing in layers and bringing an umbrella will ensure you're prepared for anything. Embrace Ireland without expectations, and you're sure to fall in love.
