When I was invited to speak at a tourism conference they advised me I could bring a plus one so I asked my daughter. She lives in Vancouver so the chance to travel together was fantastic for us both. I had no idea just how magical this journey would turn out to be. From our first steps in the quiet of an early morning airport, the warmth of the Tanzanian people was immediately evident, setting a fantastic tone for our trip.
Arusha was our starting point. It’s often just a pit stop for adventurers headed to Kilimanjaro or the Serengeti, but I say, take your time here! We kicked off our visit with a sunrise flight over Mount Kilimanjaro. Watching the sun rise above the clouds and light up the snow-capped peak of Kilimanjaro was surreal. Arusha itself is not to be overlooked. The Grand Melia Arusha, where we stayed, was a gem. It combined modern comforts with breathtaking views of Mount Meru. The hotel’s trendy rooftop bar became our favourite hangout after busy days exploring the city.
The local markets are bustling with life. Arusha's markets are a must-visit, offering everything from intricate handicrafts to lively local shops. I especially loved the handicrafts centre and the Maasai market. Despite the insistent vendors, everyone was polite and the atmosphere was welcoming. It felt great to buy beautiful crafts directly from the artists and craftsmen who made them. And don’t shy away from a little polite bartering - it’s part of the fun!
One of my favourite stops was Shanga - a workshop and store where all the employees were disabled. It felt good to support a business that empowers its staff and contributes positively to the community - this is responsible tourism at its best.
Arusha also houses the Tanzanite Museum, where you can dive deep into the history and mining of Tanzanite, a gem unique to Tanzania. We even ventured to the Tanzanite Experience where you can go learn about the processes and go deep into the mines, which was a stark reminder of the hard work behind the beautiful stones. I couldn’t leave without getting matching Tanzanite rings for my daughter and me - a special keepsake from our trip.
Next on our itinerary was Tarangire National Park. Wow, the wildlife here did not disappoint! We were lucky to see a whole cast of animals in their natural habitat - elephants, a leopard lounging in a tree, lions, hyenas, zebras, giraffes, and various kinds of gazelles. We stayed at the stunning Leemala Lodge, where balconies overlook the Savannah and Maasai warriors escort you to dinner - you want to enjoy dinner not BE dinner! It felt both adventurous and safe - a unique combination that’s hard to find.
Our adventure continued to the Ngorongoro Crater, which felt like stepping into a different world. The lush jungle setting and spectacular tree canopies gave off major Jungle Book vibes. The crater guarantees wildlife sightings, and it did not disappoint. Lions lazing on the road were a particular highlight, allowing us to get incredibly close for some perfect photo ops. We saw a dizzying array of wild animals, all the big five and even thousands of pink flamingos at a saltwater lake.
Just outside the crater, we stayed at O’ldeani Mountain Lodge, which was lovely and cozy in a perfect location.
Our time in Ngorongoro wasn’t just about game drives; one of the most memorable experiences was visiting the Hadzabe tribe. They're one of the last hunter-gatherer tribes in Africa and they live a nomadic life, really in tune with nature. We didn't go hunting with them; which is an available option, but we did get to see their homes and learn about their day-to-day lives, which was incredibly fascinating.
One of the tribe's hunters excitedly showed us the different arrows they use, and even though he spoke in his own click language, his passion and gestures made everything crystal clear.
Getting to spend time with the Hadzabe was amazing. It really showed us how they respect the earth and live sustainably. This visit was a vivid reminder of how diverse and wonderful human life can be, all around the world.
Finally, we flew to Zanzibar, where the pace of life slows down to match the gentle wash of the ocean waves. The white sandy beaches were a dream, and our stay at the Grand Melia was nothing short of luxurious.
Going on the Safari Blue tour in Zanzibar was an absolute treat. This adventure took us sailing around the gorgeous Menai Bay Conservation Area on a traditional wooden dhow. The day was packed with activities from swimming and snorkelling in the crystal-clear waters, to watching playful dolphins. The tour is famous for its attention to environmental conservation, ensuring that every experience is both enjoyable and eco-friendly.
One of the most memorable parts of the Safari Blue experience was the stop at Kwale Island. Here, we indulged in a delicious Swahili seafood barbecue and a tropical fruit tasting that was simply out of this world. The spice tour was a highlight, showcasing Zanzibar’s rich history as a spice island. Zanzibar, often referred to as the Spice Island, offers an immersive journey into its lush spice farms. During the tour, we walked through plantations that wafted with the aromas of cloves, vanilla, nutmeg, and cinnamon, among others. Guides explained the growth and processing of each spice, making it a sensory and educational treat.I wished we had time for a cooking class to dive even deeper into the culinary delights of the region.
Our trip to Tanzania was an incredible tapestry of experiences, each moment woven with the threads of Tanzania’s rich cultural and natural heritage. The safety of the places we visited, the remarkable wildlife encounters, the graciousness of the people, and the stunning landscapes of Ngorongoro - all these elements combined to make this journey unforgettable.
Travelling with my daughter, sharing these experiences, made it even more special. We came to Tanzania not knowing what to expect and left with our hearts full and our minds enriched. This trip was about more than just seeing new places; it was about connecting deeply with them, understanding their essence, and returning home inspired to share these stories. Tanzania is a country of overwhelming beauty and warmth, and I can’t wait to come back. This adventure has been a beautiful chapter in our lives, one that we’ll cherish forever.
