Earlier this month, a promotional NÜTRL branded tumbler distributed across Canada has been linked to multiple adverse health effects, according to an updated notice from Health Canada released on Friday.

Health Canada’s recall notice states that around 33,000 of these tumblers were handed out as promotional gifts at various liquor commissions and retailers nationwide between April 29 and May 17, 2024.

Originally posted on May 19, the recall notice cited a manufacturing defect that could cause the tumblers to release harmful contaminants. The updated notice provides further details on the potential risks.

"Testing to date has revealed that some of the tumblers may contain a chemical solution trapped between the inner walls, which includes sulfuric and phosphoric acids," the new notice explains.

This trapped solution can be released when the tumbler is filled with liquid, posing a serious injury risk. The interaction between the contaminants and the tumblers can also lead to elevated levels of iron, chromium, and nickel, the notice adds.

Health effects from ingesting these chemicals can be severe, including "burning of the lips, tongue, throat, stomach, and other tissue damage, as well as nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and diarrhea." Additionally, skin contact with these chemicals may result in blistering, burns, pain, and redness.

The recalled 30 oz. (887 ml) stainless steel tumblers, branded with NÜTRL, were manufactured in China by Sunscope and distributed as gifts with the purchase of a case of 12 or 15 NÜTRL seltzers.

As of May 23, Sunscope reported receiving 43 consumer complaints of symptoms after using the recalled tumblers. Commonly reported symptoms include headaches, nausea, abdominal cramps and pain, and diarrhea.

Health Canada advises all consumers to stop using the affected tumblers immediately and to contact Sedgwick, a small claims assistance service, for help. Consumers can call toll-free at 1-866-846-1778, available 24/7, or email [email protected].

Anyone experiencing symptoms is encouraged to seek medical assistance promptly.
