To make dental care more accessible, the Government of Canada introduced the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) as part of Budget 2023. This plan aims to assist up to nine million uninsured Canadians with an annual family income below $90,000.

The CDCP won't replace existing dental plans but intends to fill gaps in coverage. It's designed to complement provincial and federal programs, encouraging continued investment in oral health across the country.

The federal government unveiled some details Monday on the long-awaited plan to help uninsured Canadians afford dental care. Here's what you need to know:

Who Qualifies:

To be eligible, individuals must:

  • Not have dental insurance
  • Have a family income under $90,000
  • Be a Canadian tax resident
  • Have filed taxes the previous year

Application Process:

Applications open in phases:

  • Seniors aged 87 and above - Starting December 2023
  • Seniors aged 77 to 86 - Starting January 2024
  • Seniors aged 72 to 76 - Starting February 2024
  • Seniors aged 70 to 71 - Starting March 2024
  • Seniors aged 65 to 69 - Starting - Starting May 2024
  • Persons with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate - Starting June 2024
  • Children under 18 years old - Starting June 2024
  • All remaining eligible Canadian residents - Starting 2025

How to Apply:

Potential qualifiers will receive personalized application letters and codes via mail. Eligible seniors can apply via phone initially, then online. Successful applicants will be notified promptly.

What's Covered:

The CDCP covers various dental services based on professional recommendations, including preventive, diagnostic, restorative, and surgical procedures. Reimbursement will depend on the applicant's income bracket.
