Embarking on Safe Adventures: Your Ultimate Guide to Travel Safety

This week Lorraine dives into the essential world of travel safety, covering everything you need to know to ensure your journey is as secure and enjoyable as possible

Hello, wanderlust warriors! If you’ve been following my journey, you know that travelling is not just about discovering new places; it’s about doing so safely and joyfully. As we pack our bags for our next escapade, let’s dive deep into the essential world of travel safety. Whether you’re jet-setting across continents or exploring hidden gems closer to home, ensuring your journey is as secure as it is thrilling is paramount.

Cleanliness in the Skies and Beyond

First off, let’s tackle the not-so-glamorous part of travel - cleanliness. In a world still reeling from the impacts of global health crises, keeping those germs at bay is more crucial than ever. Aeroplanes, trains, and buses are bustling hubs of activity, which means they can also be hotspots for unwanted hitchhikers (yes, I’m talking about bacteria and viruses!). There often isn’t enough time to clean a plane between flights so be prepared to clean your area down for your own peace of mind.

Lorraine’s Tip:
Always pack a travel-sized sanitiser, disinfectant wipes, and a quality mask. Book the first flight of the day for a cleaner plane and never ever use the seat pocket - this is where people have stored dirty nappies, used vomit bags and more!

Dodging Illness Like a Pro

Avoiding illness while travelling isn’t just about fighting off germs; it’s about smart planning. From getting the necessary vaccinations for certain destinations to being mindful of what and where you eat - being proactive is key. Research in advance and check sites like TripAdvisor or tourism board recommendations. Use the tourism board website to find places to go and to avoid.

Lorraine’s Tip:
Research your destination ahead of time to know if any specific health advisories are in place. And remember, street food can be a delightful culinary adventure, but choose vendors that are busy (a sign of turnover and freshness) and where you can see the food being prepared. A recommended tour guide will always be a great way to ensure the best choices.

Insurance: Your Travel Safety Net

Now, onto something that often gets overlooked until it’s desperately needed - insurance. Travel insurance isn’t just a box to tick off; it’s a safety net that can catch you from falling into a pit of unexpected expenses, be it from trip cancellations, lost luggage, or medical emergencies. Don’t always trust your credit card insurance as there may be expensive loopholes. Research ahead of time and best to over-insure.

Lorraine’s Tip:
Invest in comprehensive travel insurance that covers both health and belongings. Reading the fine print might not be exciting, but understanding what’s covered (and what’s not) can save you a world of hassle. If you are relying on your credit card insurance make sure your entire trip is booked on the same card.

Packing Like a Pro

The contents of your suitcase can play a pivotal role in your travel safety. Beyond the essentials, here are a few items you might not have considered but could be lifesavers:

  • Portable Door Lock: For an extra layer of security in your accommodation, especially useful in budget lodgings or Airbnb rentals.
  • Water Purification Bottle: Stay hydrated without the worry of waterborne illnesses, crucial for adventures off the beaten path.
  • Torch or Headlamp: Not just for camping, but for unexpected power outages or poorly lit paths.
  • Lorraine’s Tip:
A small, portable first aid kit tailored to your destination can be invaluable. Include motion sickness tablets for those bumpy bus rides or antihistamines for unexpected allergies.

Navigating New Surroundings with Confidence

Knowing your surroundings is not just about finding the best spots; it’s about understanding how to navigate them safely.Study Maps Before You Go: Familiarize yourself with the area around your accommodation and key landmarks. This not only helps you move around more confidently but also prevents you from looking like a lost tourist.Use Reputable Transport: Research trusted transport options available, especially for airport transfers. Apps like Uber or local equivalents can be safer than hailing cabs off the street.

Lorraine’s Tip:
Always have a physical map or download offline maps. Technology is great until it isn’t. Plus, it’s easier to ask for directions with a map in hand.

Outsmarting Pickpockets in Crowded Areas

Crowded areas are prime spots for pickpockets. Here’s how to outsmart them:

  • Wear a Money Belt or Neck Wallet: Keep your valuables close and out of sight. This is especially important in crowded places like markets or public transport.
  • Be Mindful of Distractions: Pickpockets often work in teams where one distracts you while the other makes their move. Stay alert and keep a firm grip on your belongings.
Lorraine’s Tip:
Opt for bags with slash-proof material and locks. They might not be the height of fashion, but neither is losing your passport or phone. Leave your valuables at home and if you must, use the hotel safe and leave one shoe in the safe so you won’t leave without checking.

Avoiding the Unwanted: Stay Informed, Stay Safe

  • Research Local Scams: Every destination has its own set of common tourist scams. A quick search can prepare you for what to watch out for.
  • Avoid Flashing Valuables: Displaying expensive jewellery, cameras, or even smartphones can make you a target. When not in use, keep them out of sight. Or even better leave at home.
Lorraine’s Tip:
Engage with locals to get insights into areas to avoid, especially after dark. There’s no better guide than someone who calls the place home.

Final Nuggets of Wisdom

As we gear up for our next journey, embracing these safety tips ensures our adventures are not just exhilarating but also secure. Remember, the goal of travel is to enrich our lives with experiences and memories, not complications. By preparing wisely, we can navigate the globe with confidence, savouring each moment to its fullest.

As we quench our wanderlust, let’s make safety our constant travel companion. It’s not just about the measures we take but the peace of mind that comes with them, allowing us to immerse fully in the beauty and excitement of our journeys. From the neon-lit streets of bustling cities to the serene vistas of untouched landscapes, knowing we’re taking steps to protect ourselves and our loved ones makes every adventure that much more enjoyable.
