Cast a line in one of Ontario’s best-kept secrets for world-class fishing

With easy access to rivers, lakes, and charters, this northern destination offers unforgettable fishing experiences—no wilderness trek required.

A trip to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, offers more than stunning scenery and historic charm—it’s also one of the province’s most underrated fishing destinations. From casting off the scenic riverfront boardwalk to exploring nearby inland lakes and rivers, world-class angling opportunities are right at your doorstep—without venturing far from your hotel. After reeling in the day’s catch, you can kick back and relax in luxurious accommodations with stunning views.

One of the region’s crown jewels is the St. Marys River Rapids, where Lake Superior meets Lake Huron. This world-renowned fishery draws anglers from around the globe for its annual runs of Atlantic Salmon and Steelhead Trout—famously praised by Ernest Hemingway during his visits to the region. Depending on the season, you might also hook into several varieties of Pacific Salmon.

Fly fishing in the St. Marys River Rapids is a unique chance to get your feet wet, test your skills, and take part in a historic fishery at the confluence of two of Canada’s most impressive bodies of water. Prefer something a little more laid-back? No problem—fishing platforms along the city’s waterfront boardwalk make the river easily accessible for families and less experienced anglers alike.

When Should I Come?

Urban fishing in the rapids is year-round, but different catches have different seasons. Expect to catch Whitefish and Steelhead year-round, while Atlantic Salmon runs from July to mid-August. Pacific Salmon varieties have slightly shorter seasons. Look for Chinook and Pink Salmon in late August, with Coho arriving by mid-October.
