Have you heard about the latest craze in health drinks? Tadpole water—made famous on TikTok—is a viral chia seed drink that's gaining popularity for its health benefits.

Also known as an "internal shower," this warm chia seed drink is touted to aid with weight loss, bloating, gut health, and detoxification. Combining chia seeds with refreshing lemon, it has become a hit among health enthusiasts of all ages.

Chia seeds are high in fibre, which aids digestion, promotes a feeling of fullness and regulates blood sugar. The fibre in chia seeds is mainly soluble, which forms a gel-like substance in the stomach, slowing digestion and providing a steady flow of energy. So tadpole water can help you to feel fuller for longer, which could help reduce appetite and overall calorie intake.

So, what is tadpole water?

Tadpole water gets its—let’s face it, rather unappetizing—name from the gelatinous texture of chia seeds when soaked in warm water, resembling tiny tadpoles swimming in a glass. Despite its less than desirable name, this drink offers some notable health benefits that are gaining attention.

Health benefits

Chia seeds are packed with nutritional goodness, including omega-3 fatty acids, fibre, protein, and antioxidants. When soaked, they form a gel-like consistency that helps with hydration, digestion, and overall well-being. Tadpole water is not only refreshing but also good for gut health.

But don’t fall too hard for the hype

It's important to note that while tadpole water can support hydration and digestive health, it is not a miracle solution for weight loss, as many TikTokers will have you believe. Chia seeds can help keep you full longer, reducing unnecessary snacking, but sustainable weight management requires a balanced diet, regular exercise, and the right mix of nutrients. Ensure you soak chia seeds well to prevent them from absorbing water directly in your gut, which could lead to discomfort like constipation.

How to make traditional tadpole Water

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds

  • 1 cup warm water

  • Juice of half a lemon

Instructions:

  1. In a glass, combine chia seeds and warm water.

  2. Squeeze in the juice of half a lemon.

  3. Stir well and let it sit for about 10 minutes to allow the chia seeds to swell and become gelatinous.

  4. Stir again before drinking.

Tips for shaking up the flavour profile

Experiment with flavours by adding herbs like mint or basil, or infuse it with citrus fruits for a zesty twist. For a creamier texture, substitute water with plant-based milk like almond or oat milk. Incorporate tadpole water into your morning routine for hydration and energy.
